This week, we are going a little deeper into the world of Winter Squash to talk about Acorn Squash! Also known as a “Pepper Squash,” this fruit has long, deep ridges and a sweet, yellow-orange inside.
Acorn Squash has a sweet taste that becomes even more pungent after roasting. It is absolutely delicious when prepped with saltier foods for a balance of flavors, or even sweeter additions for a dinner that feels like dessert. Best part about it? Everyone just loves cooking meals inside the acorn squash- for flavor, festivities, and just plain fun presentation! Self-serving is such a lovely quality in a fruit. No dirty plates or bowls, just mess on our faces from trying to eat too quickly! Some of our favorite pairing options include:
- Salty cheeses such as Blue Cheese. This pairing is especially delicious if you add caramelized onions and some other sauteed veggies. Sprinkle the cheese on top as soon as the squash comes out of the oven so it melts deliciously on top.
- Acorn Squash with a sweet & salty brown sugar and butter glaze- who says things can’t get sugary at mealtime? This fantastically decadent combo will have you feeling satisfied for dinner- or dessert!
- Crisp pancetta is another way to bulk up the Acorn squash without sacrificing the natural flavor. The protein will keep you full and happy, with energy to cook up more squash concoctions!
Next week we’re loving butternut squash but until then, I’m setting my oven to preheat and waitinng to dig into my squash bowl.
