August is the perfect month to roast golden, melty marshmallows over an open fire. Particularly tomorrow, on National S’mores Day! Spend a warm night in the backyard, on a family camping trip, or wherever summer travel takes you to enjoy the perennial layers of chocolate + marshmallow + graham cracker.

Those classic s’mores do have a place in our hearts — but since we’re always open to branching out, we decided to step up our game and introduce some new ingredients that are hard to resist.

Strawberry S’mores Skewers

Who knew s’mores could pack a wholesome punch? In this simple skewer, strawberries give us a healthy dose of vitamin C and a pop of juicy flavor that perfectly complements the rich marshmallow.

Ingredients

  • 1 Carton Strawberries
  • 2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 Bag Marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Slice green leafy tops off strawberries and combine vinegar with sugar in a medium bowl.
  2. Lightly toss strawberries in bowl until saturated, 2-3 minutes, adding more 2 parts vinegar, 1 part brown sugar as necessary if not all strawberries are saturated.
  3. Thread strawberries between marshmallows and put the whole skewer over heat until marshmallows are golden, 1-2 minutes.

Threading the skewers is a great job for kids: strawberry + marshmallow + strawberry + marshmallow, ad infinitum.

S’more Ways to Use Strawberries

  • Layer a slice between the chocolate and the graham cracker in a typical s’more.
  • Combine with toasty marshmallows and sprinkle Greek yogurt chips or coconut flakes to taste.
  • Get fancy by cutting the leafy tops off, scooping small holes, and filling with melted chocolate before pairing with marshmallow. Store in an egg crate and refrigerate until chocolate is no longer runny, about 5 minutes.

Banana S’mores Dip

Whip out this super simple crowd-pleaser on those rainy days when the firewood is too soggy for a proper campfire. And since every good dip needs a crunchy vessel, break up those graham crackers, pop ’em in your chip bowl, and dig in.

Contains potassium: check.

Cooks in less than 20 minutes: check.

Comes with a crown of crispy-top marshmallows: CHECK.

S’more Ways to Use Bananas

  • Layer a slice between the chocolate and the graham cracker in a typical s’more. Include a dollop of peanut butter to add some creamy texture to the mix.
  • Get fancy by just barely slicing the peeled banana lengthwise and stuffing with a layer of peanut butter, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Wrap it in foil (with the top of the stuffing exposed) and place over heat until the peels blacken, 10-15 minutes. Eat the insides with a spoon — but not before showing us your masterpiece with #HelloFreshPics, of course.
