BIG NEWS! We’re Relaunching The Family Plan August 14, 2017

You ate, we listened. And now, after months of testing, tasting, re-testing, and crowd-sourcing from kids and adults alike, we’ve reached the 30-minute, 2 pot max, simple, kid-approved, minimal cleanup, Family Plan sweet spot. We may be biased, but we’re pretty sure our new and improved family recipes are revolutionary.  

Here’s what you can expect from the revamped Family Plan hitting boxes on August 19.

1. Quick and easy recipes

Simplicity is the name of the game for the revamped Family Plan, which is why most recipes come together in around 30 minutes or less. But it doesn’t stop there. Because they only require two pots/pans MAX (with a whole lot of one-pot wonders like these Pork Carnitas Tacos thrown in there), you can kiss huge stacks of dishes goodbye. Minimal time spent cleaning up means more time for the zillion other tasks on your to-do list.

2. Kid-tested flavor

Recipes may be quick, but that doesn’t mean they skimp out on flavor. In fact, we conducted robust testing to gauge exactly what flavors, cuisines, and ingredients both kids and adults will love. We’re talking things as specific as what type of cheese reigns supreme (spoiler alert: it’s Parmesan, which explains this No-Fuss Pesto Chicken recipe).

3. Parent-approved nutrition

Don’t tell the little ones this, but the meals are balanced, too! They all come with a balance of colorful veggies, meat proteins, and hearty carbs to fill up those tummies and put smiles on everyone’s faces night after night. Case in point: Maple-Glazed Pork Chops with a Sweet Potato Mash and Garlicky Green Beans.

4. Expanded menu options

There’s now five (yes, five!) menu options to choose from every week to allow you more choice and the peace of mind knowing that even the pickiest of eaters will be asking for seconds. Because let’s be honest, three meals per week just doesn’t cut it when we get our hands on a recipe like Beef Rice Noodle Bowls with Carrots, Cucumbers, and Peanut Sauce. HOW CAN YOU RESIST?

5. A whole lot of fun

Instead of spending time planning out meals, fishing for recipes around the web, worrying about whether or not the kids will eat them, and stressing about how long they take to cook, you could let us do it. We’ve got you covered with recipes like these Monterey Jack Burgers with Jammy Red Onions and Zucchini Fries. Now just imagine how much more time you’ll have to do the fun stuff. We’re talking another two rounds of hide-and-seek, the chance to actually finish a game of Monopoly, time to help out with homework, read together before bed, pack tomorrow’s lunch, do laundry… the list goes on.

It’s about time dinner stress turned into dinner time, don’t you think?

Our revamped Family Plan is shaping up to be the best thing since the invention of the carpool. Or babysitters. In fact, the only hard part we foresee is deciding which quick and easy, nutritious, and delicious meals you want in your box.

We are so excited to be able to choose 3 out of the 5 meals now for our family plan. I want to thank you all at Hello Fresh for expanding the palette for my 4th and 5th grader over the last year! They love pork apple burgers, orzo, chorizo, and a ton of other ingredients they otherwise wouldn’t have tried. My daughter and I have so much fun cooking at night together! I tell other parents/friends all the time how much its changed out family life! We actually save money not running to the grocery store daily and actually enjoy eating leftovers! Bravo!

I have been receiving Hello Fresh for quite a few months now and I have the dinner for 4 plan. There never seems to be enough vegetables given to cook – there is always plenty of starch, just wish they would add more vegetables for a family of 4. For instance, last week I was given only 2 zucchini (which were rather small) as our vegetable for 4 people. Thanks.

I am trying HelloFresh for the first time starting next week but I have been a long-time customer of one of your competitors. My only criticism of your plans, and plans of your competitors, is that you don’t give more options for number of servings for larger families. I’m not sure how the number four was determined as an ideal number of servings for families, but you should have more options here. My family size is 7. My husband and I have 5 kids so I have to make two of your meals to feed everyone. It would be really nice to have an option of 6 or 8 servings. Eight seems like it would be really simple since you’re just doubling everything. Please consider making this an option.

Would you please make an offering for 3 people instead of just 2 and 4? Many families like mine have one child out of the home and only one left so a 4 person set is too much while the 2 person set is not enough.

Shannon- currently our Family Plan feeds 2 or 4 people, but we have lots of customers who get the 4 person plan and then pack the leftovers for lunch!

I would like to add to this that, yes, Crockpot meals would be so nice. And none of these recipes where you sear the meat, then caramelize the onions, then add the noodles 2 hours later, then add the whatever 2 hours later. I would like to just throw the ingredients in the crockpot and forget it. Thanks!

I was excited by your blog post about the revamped family meals. HOWEVER, when I switched and looked at the calories of the family meals, I was outraged. We try to eat healthy at my house. And when your post said it was parent approved nutrition, you must have meant parents who don’t mind their kids eating high calorie meals. So disappointing. Your classic meals have much better lower calorie choices available. Please reconsider options that include lower calorie meals.

Carol – nope! The only difference is that Family Box customers can now choose their meals, whereas previously they received 3 chef-picked meals.

This is good news but what about portion sizes? We are a family of five and we’ve struggled with portion sizes. Sometimes we can easily share a meal amongst all five of us and other times you can barely eat enough for three people. We are two adults and three kids between ages 7-11 so you would think a family plan for 3 kids and 2 adults would be enough. Any changes to portion sizes?

I was using Hello Fresh, but in the past year, my husband and I have had to drastically change our eating habits. He is a diabetic and therefore, carbohydrates and fat are a major concern. I have been diagnosed with chronic acid reflux, so I have to be mindful of trigger foods such as citrus, tomatoes, and spicy foods. Does your service provide enough healthy options every week such that with careful planning and ordering I could put together appropriate meals for my family?

Because everyone has different tastes, allergies, and preferences, we leave it to our customers to review the ingredients and determine which recipes best meet their dietary needs. I LOVE the concept of the family friendly box. Will there be vegetarian options in the family box? Your vegetarian box is delicious and I love it, but it’s not always kid-approved, two pot max, easy clean-up, I would LOVE to subscribe to a family-friendly vegetarian box.

I originally signed up for the family plan because we are well, a family. I quickly realized this plan wouldn’t work because we are vegetarian. I am wondering if now, as the family plan has changed, there are some vegetarian options to choose from each week? I highly recommend this course OR tweaking the vegetarian meal plan to work for families better.

I absolutely love Hello Fresh. My husband was quite apprehensive at first (he thought it would be too expensive). We love the fact that each meals ingredients are bagged together and recipes are so easy to follow. I have a hubby who looks forward to that weekly box now!

I think you should be able to cross over from one plan to another. Sometimes I like things from the regular plan, and sometimes I would like to throw in a few family plan options.

A couple of gluten-free options each would be really nice. Use potatoes/sweet potatoes for the starch. Occasionally swap the flour tortillas with corn tortillas or swap the couscous with rice. Use recipes with rice noodles. 🙂

Hello! I haven’t tried hellofresh yet! But we want to so bad! The only thing stoping us is we are a 5 member family. And I only see a option for 4. 😞 Does that mean we can’t get a plan? I have all growing boys! So 4 portions won’t feed everyone.

Hi Nichole– Jordan here from our community team. Unfortunately, we don’t offer plans for more than 4 people, but you can order multiple boxes per week!

You really need to offer larger plans for families of 5 or 6. Adding 1 or 2 extra serving to a family plan would make sense

Hi Kat, we don’t currently offer a 5-serving plan. You can always create multiple subscriptions to receive more than one box per week, though!

Considering a lot of families have two adults and three kids it surprised me that you only have four serving maximum. I have two adults and three hungry teenagers, how do I make that work for me?
