Sorry, but pesto made with anything but basil and pine nuts is sacrilege in my family. I still have the marble mortar and big wooden pestle that my Genoese great-grandmother brought with her from Italy in 1868.

That said, I’m going to try the cilantro recipe and go to Confession afterwards.

Great article Jacqueline! You came up with some great suggestions I would probably not have considered. I agree with the vodka comment! I infuse with peppers, onions, citrus and herbs for more flavorful bloody marys.

Herbs in oil = botulism risk unless you follow acidifying instructions for just a few select herbs, and only for refrigeration, not shelf stable.

I grew up in the south. If you add anything to basic guacamole it becomes “guac salad” or “guac salsa”. Just wanted to let you know

I used to use onions in guac … until I came across the Trader Joe’s guac kit (no longer available), which uses shallots instead. All the flavor but subtler and with a bit less bite. Also, better sized for smaller amounts of guac! I think this would be a good change for HF to make to its kits. Also, coarsely chopping the avocados, rather than mashing them, works well, too, especially if they’re riper (when they will naturally have some softer, creamier parts).

Another twist on the original: My best friend often adds finely chopped turkey pastrami. Sounds a bit weird but it’s wonderful!
