Developing new recipes is much like writing, painting, or playing an instrument: you need an idea or inspiration to create something new. This can be especially challenging with cooking. How does one create a recipe that is truly original?

While our chefs at HelloFresh pride themselves on coming up with some pretty darn original and delicious recipes, many of our dishes are inspired by other recipes we’ve read in cookbooks, tried at restaurants, or grandma used to make.

This week’s Squash and Kale Flatbread is a great example of how our chefs use their own experiences as inspiration when developing the recipes in your box. One of our favorite lunch spots near the HelloFresh office in NYC is Better Being Underground. They have amazing sandwiches and killer chocolate cookies, but their Squashbuckler is by far the office favorite: butternut squash, kale, tangy red onions, and manchego cheese on crunchy sourdough bread. We’ve shared many a Squashbuckler here at HelloFresh that it finally dawned us to incorporate a similar flavor profile into one of our recipes. And so we bring you this week’s Squash and Kale Flatbread: caramelized red onion & squash with balsamic and thyme, garlicky kale, and gooey mozzarella cheese on a crispy crust that you’ll roll out yourself. We hope you love it as much as we do!
