Five a Day January 19, 2016
Let’s take a long, hard look at your plates, folks. As our New Year’s resolutions encourage us to cut this, and eat less of that, it’s important to focus on giving our body what it really needs. The nutrients and natural vitamins that you can get from good old fashion fruits and veggies is crucial to help every system in your body function, and these food groups must not be overlooked!
Maybe you’ve read the articles proclaiming five is the magic number. But is it five fruits AND five veggies? Fruits OR veggies? Five TOTAL? Don’t fret, I’m here to clarify and keep your dinners bright with nutritional value.
The “5 a day” campaign is actually suggested by the World Health Organization, but it’s a little more complicated than that. The campaign actually suggests eating a minimum of 400 grams of fruits and vegetables every day, which equals out to about five foods. Take note of how big your portions are, because eating one blueberry doesn’t count. The good news? Meeting the five a day standard lowers the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.
Check out this article from the Guardian or more information on why this standard is so important (and delicious!), and how beating it can improve your health!
I don’t know about you all, but I’m exceeding my five a day goal each night with dinner alone. With all the fresh fruits and vegetables HelloFresh stuffs in your box, I lose count!
Happy Cooking!
