Ingredient Substitutions: Short on Shortening? September 5, 2015

by Eat

We are in the business of sending you ingredients to cook delicious meals, but even we know what it’s like to go to the grocery store for eggs and leave with everything but.  There’s nothing worse than getting home to your kitchen after a long day with the perfect dinner in your head but nothing in your pantry.   Or- even worse!- getting half way through a recipe and realizing you’re missing a key ingredient.  Everything is out and mixed, bowls are dirty, meat defrosted and…no bread crumbs for the crispy chicken.

Now, because we are also in the business of saving your taste buds (and at times, managing your sanity!) we have compiled a handy list of substitutions for common ingredients you may need to switch out in a pinch:

  • Corn Syrup (1 cup light) = 1 cup granulated sugar with ¼ cup liquid used in recipe
  • Corn Starch (1 Tablespoon) = 3T of flour
  • Evaporated Milk = 12 oz cream
  • Balsamic vinegar = Sherry or cider vinegar
  • Bread crumbs =uncooked oatmeal

For a larger list of substitutions you might find helpful, check out Land O’ Lakes complete list!

So if the in-laws are coming for dinner and you’re a tablespoon short of being the perfect host, just breathe and remember:  HelloFresh has got you covered.
