Meet the Man Behind Our Avocados September 29, 2016

by Behind the Scenes

There are many Bobs in this world, but there’s only one Avocado Bob. We traveled to Southern California to meet him, get a tour of his farm, and learn more about the creamy avocados that make their way from sunny San Diego into the HelloFresh boxes.

We smash avocados into chunky, lime-spiked dips, toss them into hearty salads, slather ’em on toast, and eat them right out of the skin with nothing but a spoon and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt. Needless to say, we love these creamy green fruits (a LOT) and have a feeling you do, too.

So when it came time for us to decide what the first installment of our Fresh From The Source series would be, it was a no-brainer. Without further ado, we would like to present to you the man responsible for many of HelloFresh’s Hass avocados, the one and only Avocado Bob.

Bob Siemer is a second generation farmer at Del Rey Avocado, a family owned and operated farm that has been satisfying guacamole cravings across the country since 1969.

Thanks to its ideal location near the San Luis Rey River in San Diego County, the farm receives an ample amount of warm California sunshine and cool ocean breezes. As a result, their avocados are kept from maturing too quickly. In fact, they sit on the tree for up to 16 months before their flesh turns pale green and skin turns from green to purplish-black. That, Avocado Bob and his daughter, Jessica, explained to us, is when you know the avocado has produced the most amount of healthy oils. In other words, harvest time.

So go ahead–pop out that seed, scoop out the flesh, and feel free to double dip. Because by the time these super fruits make their way to your doorstep, you can rest assured knowing they were grown, picked, and shipped with nothing but love.

And in the meantime, learn how these super fruits work wonders for your brain.
